At UCSF Anesthesia and Perioperative Care, we work passionately to advance knowledge that benefits life and health worldwide. Partnering with leading innovators in academia, science, technology and industry in pursuit of our public mission, our faculty are active contributors to learned anesthesia societies at the local, national, and international level.

Below are just a few examples from 2018.

Professor Martin London, MD, has been appointed as a Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography (FASE). As quoted from the American Society of Echocardiography

The FASE credential recognizes the dedicated ASE member with an extraordinary commitment to the field of cardiovascular ultrasound. This designation is a peer-review process.

Associate Professor Muhammad Shaikh, MD, PhD, has won the CME questions writer award from the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS) for 2018. The IARS was “founded in 1922 to advance and support scientific research and education related to anesthesia, and to improve patient care through research.”

Associate Professor Marc Steurer, MD, MHA, has been appointed to both the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Committee on Trauma and Emergency Preparedness (COTEP), as well as the California Society of Anesthesiologists (CSA) Committee on Legislative Affairs

The mission of the COTEP is to “improve the care of patients with traumatic injury and to educate anesthesiologists in disaster management.”

Among other duties, Legislative Affairs Committee members have the following responsibilities, as listed on the CSA website:

  • To educate and update CSA members on events related to legislation that affect, or may affect in the future, the practice of anesthesiology within the state.
  • To maintain contact with advocacy efforts within ASA, and coordinate state and national advocacy work as appropriate.
  • To foster grassroots advocacy on the district level within this Society.
