Research

The Research Unit provides a broad scope of services in support of the department’s research enterprise. In administration and fiscal management, services include overseeing PI portfolios, managing and reporting pre-award and post-award activities, budget preparation, reporting of intra- and extramural contracts and grants, and handling research space and equipment inquiries. In the area of research development and training, the unit identifies funding opportunities, provides grant writing and review and supports diversity initiatives and research mentorship and training. The unit has a seven-member PI Portfolio team.

Plans, coordinates, and maintains research education and development programs for learners and faculty such as the visiting speakers program, research lecture series, and annual research symposium. 

Dulce Mohler – PI Portfolio Manager

Provides leadership, training and expertise to the PI Portfolio team and research faculty in all financial post-award management activities for sponsored and intramural funds, as well as compliance with sponsor and university regulations.

PI Portfolio Team 

The seven team members support all aspects of managing intra- and extramural awards, department RFAs and clinical seeds, endowments, and research scholar funds. Their responsibilities include performing financial analysis and reporting, reconciliation and verification of ledger accounts, preparation of BearBuy requisitions, reimbursements, journal entries for salary and non-payroll expense transfers, etc. In addition, they work with Contracts and Grants Accounting to prepare invoices, reports, and award closeouts. Some team members also provide administrative support to help laboratories receive deliveries.  
The Portfolio Team members are:
Ken Chew, Phillip Evans, Lynn Ha, Joice Karyadi, Dulce Mohler and Giang Vu. As of February 2021, they provide support for 123 PIs.
