Any additional records are helpful, but your medical team can also help in obtaining these records

  • 9 Medical/Surgical ICU: (415) 353-1621

After the main entrance, you will encounter an information desk or, if after after-hours, a security guard. Please ask for your loved one’s floor and bed. To enter the secure ICU, ring the bell for access, and a front-desk greeter will sign you in. If someone in your party has arrived before you, there may be a code word required for entry (ask your bedside nurse for more information on the code word).

If your loved one is being transferred to UCSF from another hospital, we recommend you ask the transferring hospital to which floor and bed, if known, your loved one will be going.

Key people to talk to when you arrive

  • Bedside nurse: He or she will be at your loved one’s side minute-to-minute. A great first person to ask for upon arrival.
  • Charge nurse: He or she helps helps manage all patients in the ICU. Also a great initial person to ask for.
  • Physician: There will always be a physician caring for your loved one 24 hours a day. The best way to arrange a conversation is to ask your family member’s bedside nurse to set up a meeting.
  • The ICU social worker: There are dedicated ICU social workers that can help connect you to resources, including financial counseling. They are available during the daytime hours, and you can request a meeting by talking to your loved one’s bedside nurse.
