Simulation at UCSF


The Center for Health Care Simulation currently resides in Pride Hall at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. The anesthesia faculty run courses that facilitate the training of medical students, residents, fellows and board certified anesthesiologists. Vincent Lew, MD, an anesthesiologist at ZSFG, directs the center with the administrative help of Vasilis Tabakis. Oana Maties, MD, is the UCSF Medical Students director.

Simulator Program information

  • All first year UCSF medical students learn about cardiovascular pharmacology in the evaluation of a simulated patient in the emergency department setting.
  • All first year UCSF medical students learn about differential diagnosis of a common respiratory complaint a simulated patient in the hospital setting.
  • All first year UCSF medical students learn applied pharmacology by performing a general anesthetic on the patient simulator. They consolidate knowledge in small group sessions that follow the hands-on simulation.
  • Third and fourth year UCSF medical students in the Anesthesia 110 clerkship manage common adverse patient events as they perform a general anesthetic on the simulator.
  • Fourth year medical students on their various Anesthesia 140 electives manage common adverse patient events in the operating room or ICU setting.
