The anesthesia faculty run courses that facilitate the training of medical students, residents, fellows and board certified anesthesiologists. It is an ASA accredited center that offers simulation courses to fulfill the ABA Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA®). Maytinee Lilaonitkul, MBBS, an anesthesiologist at ZSFG, directs the center with the administrative help of Justin AquinoOana Maties, MD, is the UCSF Medical Students director. Simulator Program offerings and information

Medical Students

  • All first year UCSF medical students learn about applied pharmacology of general anesthesia on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems through hands-on simulation.
  • Third and fourth year UCSF medical students in the Anesthesia 110 clerkship and 140 electives learn to manage common adverse events in the operating room with high-fidelity simulation.

Interns and 1st year Anesthesia Residents

  • The simulation program is integrated as part of the onboarding bootcamp for novice residents. Learners gain confidence and comfort with basic anesthesia inductions and build skills and knowledge to manage common complications during induction, maintenance and emergence phases of anesthesia.

2nd and 3rd year Anesthesia Residents

  • In this anesthesia crisis resource management (ACRM) curriculum, residents learn to apply both technical and non-technical skills during a crisis situation in the operating room with high-fidelity simulation. Scenarios include rare anesthetic emergencies, difficulty airway, trauma, obstetric emergencies and difficult communication with team members.

Anesthesia and Critical Care Fellows

  • An in-house Managing Emergencies in Pediatric Anesthesia (MEPA) course is offered to pediatric anesthesia fellows at UCSF. All critical care fellows undergo crisis management simulation training of critically ill patients in the ICU and emergency room settings.

MOCA Simulation Course

  • This is an ASA-endorsed course offered to fully board certified anesthesiologists nationally. For more information and for upcoming course offerings, please refer to the UCSF Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA) page or contact Deanna Seid.
