At UCSF Anesthesia and Perioperative Care, we are committed to the advancement of medical knowledge and scientific breakthroughs that benefit life and health worldwide. To that end, the department provides research seed funding to help elucidate the pressing medical questions of our day, and ultimately, improve patient care and outcomes. A recent example of this work is the following peer-reviewed publication authored by Anesthesia and Perioperative Care faculty members Matthias Behrends, MDKerstin Kolodzie, MD, PhDSakura Kinjo, MD; and Pedram Aleshi, MD.

Behrends M, Yap EN, Zhang AL, Kolodzie K, Kinjo S, Harbell MW, Aleshi P. Preoperative Fascia Iliaca Block Does Not Improve Analgesia after Arthroscopic Hip Surgery, but Causes Quadriceps Muscles Weakness: A Randomized, Double-blind TrialAnesthesiology. 2018 Sep;129(3):536-543.

Importantly, Drs. Behrends et al concluded that use of a preoperative fascia iliaca block did not improve pain control after hip arthroscopy, but did result in quadriceps weakness, and could therefore not be recommended.
