Kathiriya Lab
Welcome to the Kathiriya lab at UCSF.
We are a developmental biology lab focused on cellular, molecular and genetic mechanisms of congenital heart defects.
We use disease modeling, lineage tracing and genomics to better understand patterning during heart development and molecular causes of congenital heart disease, with an ultimate goal to one day apply insights from the lab to help patients with congenital heart diseases.
We are a young lab. We have collaborations with the Bruneau laboratory at the Gladstone Institutes, the Kiemen laboratory at Johns Hopkins, and the Samee laboratory at Baylor College of Medicine.
UCSF is home to an exceptional community of scientific and clinical excellence, and San Francisco and the Bay Area is a wonderful place to live and work.
Irfan Kathiriya, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Irfan Kathiriya is a pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist practicing at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals and Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of California San Francisco. As a graduate student in Deepak Srivastava’s lab at UT Southwestern, he identified transcription factor complexes, including GATA4-TBX5 and GATA4-HEY2, and their functions. As a post-doc in Benoit Bruneau’s lab at the Gladstone Institutes, he studied human cardiac gene regulation by TBX5.
