Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia Fellowship

Advanced Clinical Training for Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia at the University of California, San Francisco

The advanced clinical training year for pediatric cardiac anesthesia provides specialized training for physicians who have completed anesthesia training in an ACGME accredited program in the United States and are board-eligible, or have completed training in a program outside the United States and are board-equivalent. Pediatric training is preferred but not required.

The focus of this training year will be the delivery of anesthetic care to pediatric patients who undergo cardiac surgery for the correction of congenital defects, care of pediatric patients in the catheterization and electrophysiology laboratories, and general operating room care of pediatric patients with significant congenital cardiac disease.

Our program is robust and growing. We are a referral center for a large catchment area of northern California and across the US. During our most recent year we performed 500 pump and pump-standby cases and over 500 cardiac catheterization or electrophysiology procedures. Operative cases included 136 neonates and 5 heart transplants. We work with 4 pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons. Our patient population includes premature infants, neonates, pediatric patients and a small number of adult patients.

Each month during the 12-month-training period you will select 2 non-clinical days for conferences or educational activity and you will choose one weekend per month for call. Our program provides experience outside of the cardiac operating room for two months, one as a fellow in the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit and one during a hand-picked elective at UCSF. Your academic appointment in the Department of Anesthesia is Clinical Instructor. As such, you qualify for faculty-based benefits that include accrual of 2 vacation days per month. We accept one fellow for advanced training in pediatric cardiac anesthesia per year.

Education during the year includes weekly didactic sessions, weekly pre-surgery and in-patient cardiology conferences and monthly quality-improvement conferences for the pediatric heart center.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until a candidate has been selected.

Interested applicants should send a letter of interest, a CV, and three letters of recommendation to Dr. Anshuman Sharma at [email protected].
