Amber Borucki, MD, Director of Pediatric Pain at UCSF, Examines the Use of Functional Pain Scales for Pediatric Patients

Assistant Clinical Professor and Director of Pediatric Pain, Dr. Amber Borucki, provides a review of pain measurement techniques for the Fall 2018 Society for Pediatric Pain Medicine Newsletter. In her review, Dr. Borucki discusses the validity of current pain assessment tools, as well as the development of more robust, functional pain scales that look at the impact that pain might be having on a patient’s ability to function. These newer functional pain scales could be particularly helpful for clinicians whose patients may be unable to self-report.
