Anshuman Sharma, MD, MBA, Appointed Director of Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia

We are delighted to announce that after an extensive search, Anshuman Sharma, MD, MBA, has been appointed as the Director of Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia in the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care, effective March 1, 2021. Sharma comes to us from Washington University in St. Louis, where he was a Professor of Anesthesiology, the Director of the Division of Quality Improvement, Institute of Quality Improvement, Research, and Informatics (INQUIRI), and the Director of the Division of Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia as well as the Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship Program.

An expert clinician, Sharma is boarded in both adult and pediatric anesthesia, and has held testamure-special competence status in transesophageal echocardiography from the National Board of Echocardiography since 2003. He is regularly invited to share his expertise about quality improvement, change management, outcomes measurement, congenital heart disease, pediatric anesthesia, pediatric cardiac surgery and more, at international, national, regional and local meetings and workshops, and is an ad-hoc reviewer for the Anesthesiology and Pharmacogenomics journals. 

Among other topics, Sharma has published extensively about postoperative complications, surgical outcomes, and quality of life, and recently, about post-surgical pain and opioid sensitivity. He is the PI or co-investigator on 7 current funded research projects, spanning topics from improving analgesia and reducing opioid consumption to telemedicine and treatment algorithms.

Sharma brings a wealth of teaching experience from Washington University, where in addition to serving as director of the pediatric anesthesia fellowship program, he was a curriculum design advisor in the school of medicine and a member of the resident selection committee in the department of anesthesiology. Dedicated to medical education, Sharma has also led and moderated multiple CME workshops for the Society of Pediatric Anesthesia, the American Society of Anesthesiology, as well as locally at Washington University.

In his new role, Sharma will lead our team of outstanding pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists, promoting collaboration, mentorship, and continued excellent clinical outcomes and the health and well-being of all pediatric cardiac patients. Please join us in welcoming Anshuman Sharma to UCSF.
