Announcing the Appointment of Matt Aldrich, MD as Interim Senior Physician Executive, Capacity and Throughput

We are pleased to announce the immediate appointment of Matt Aldrich, MD as interim senior physician executive, capacity and throughput.

On February 21st, the Patient Capacity Management Center (PCMC) was opened, a UCSF Health strategic and financial initiative focused on maximizing our capacity to see patients, while also helping ensure patients and families have the smoothest journey possible through our health system.

The PCMC provides a holistic view of a patient’s journey from our entry points – such as the ED, physician offices, outpatient clinics and transfer from outside facilities – through admission, care coordination and discharge.

Matt’s years of experience  and understanding of how patients move across the health system give him a unique enterprise-wide perspective that will be invaluable as UCSF Health works to improve patient flow. Matt led adult critical care medicine from 2014-2023, and has been a key leader in the expansion and restructuring of the adult ICUs and led variety of efforts to develop an integrated critical care system for interprofessional care delivery.

Matt will be accountable for providing clinical operational leadership related to overall bed management practices, clinical processes, systems and practices focused on improving safety, quality, efficiency, and system-wide throughput. He will work closely with medical directors, service chiefs and other departmental, operational and strategic leadership to implement strategic priorities related to capacity management. Specifically, Matt will work with physician colleagues to improve patient flow.

Please join us in congratulating Matt as he steps into this new interim role.
