The American Board of Medical Specialties requires the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) to include practice performance assessment and improvement in Part IV of the Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA®). The ABA recognizes simulation training as an innovative approach to assess a physician’s clinical and teamwork skills in managing critical events and included it in the Part IV Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA® ) requirements.

The Anesthesia Simulation Center of the UCSF Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Care is endorsed by the American Society of Anesthesiologists for meeting the standards required for conducting ABA MOCA simulation courses. This center offers eight-hour, single-day courses for four to five participants. Each participant will play active roles in all scenarios, including one scenario as the primary anesthesiologist and one as the secondary anesthesiologist. Each scenario is recorded with sound and video, which is used to guide the debriefing session that follows.

The cost of the course is $1,800 (parking, light breakfast, lunch, and 7.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ are included). To register, please click on a date in the Upcoming MOCA Course Dates section below.

For further information about the course and/or to register, please download our brochure.

For further background on the MOCA simulation course, please click on the ABA site.

Cancellation/No-Show Policy: Cancellations must be made known to the Course Administrator and/or Director 30 days prior to the simulator date. All cancellations will incur a $200 Administrative Fee. Cancellations made less than 30 days prior to the course will forfeit payment in full unless a replacement can be found.

The Simulation Center reserves the right to cancel any unfilled courses. Any session that does not have a minimum of 4 confirmed participants will be cancelled. Enrolled participants will be notified of the cancellation at least 4 weeks prior to the scheduled course date and given the opportunity to either change dates or receive a full refund. Processing fees will not apply to courses canceled by the Simulation Center.

Genuine emergency situations that prevent faculty from communicating their cancellation to attend prior to the 30-day deadline, should be brought to the attention of the Course Administrator and/or Director for review.

If a faculty member fails to provide a cancellation notice 30-days prior to the event, they will lose eligibility for this benefit for the next 5 years.
