Residency program overview

For more than half a century, the UCSF Anesthesia Residency has provided outstanding clinical training and produced leaders in our field. The demands of modern health care have led to increasing complexity in the perioperative and critical care environments. Our program has evolved to meet these challenges, and our commitment to excellence in residency training remains as strong as ever.

Residents in our program learn and provide patient care in six different medical centers, described further in teaching hospitals. The diversity and challenge of the clinical experiences are a major strength of the program, and an important reason our graduates are known for their outstanding clinical abilities. We seek residents who are accomplished academically, relish challenges and opportunities, are enthusiastic, and work well as part of a team. We encourage resident participation in scholarly activities and additional fellowship training. In the past year, we have made significant changes in our approach to didactic teaching.

Our program offers innovative pathways for critical care and research training, and participate in the UCSF Pathways to Discovery. Regardless of the path they choose, our graduates are prepared to be leaders in practice, and to meet the clinical challenges of modern perioperative care.
