Our department has long been a national leader in driving the research that ultimately improves the quality of patient care. We are among the top departments for NIH research funding in anesthesia in the United States.

The UCSF Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care’s research training program has a longstanding mission to train and foster the development of the next generation of physicians and scientists to push forward discovery and knowledge related to the care of patients whose management falls within the wide purview of anesthesiology.

Labs and groups


Major research programs in our department focus on anesthetic mechanisms, cognitive outcomes, hypoxia and ischemia, pain, vascular disease, cerebrovascular malformations and stroke, lung injury, sepsis, antibody engineering, data science and bioinformatics, and population health.

Annual research events


Anesthesia Research Day

Anesthesia Research Day (ARD) is the department’s annual research symposium. Typically held in late fall, this half-day event features a guest lecture and posters and talks from faculty, trainees, and staff.

Anesthesia Research Seminar Series

The Anesthesia Research Seminar series includes research talks from faculty and trainees, visiting speaker lectures, and educational lectures on topics relevant to the Anesthesia research community. The seminars occur on most Tuesdays from 4 - 5 p.m. via Zoom, September to June. In-person options are available for visiting speaker lectures. Details are announced 1-2 weeks prior to each session.
