Research themes

Data sciences

Data science and machine learning are revolutionizing the way we address unmet needs in anesthesia and critical care medicine. Applied and methodological research span bench to bedside and a wide variety of focus areas, including artificial intelligence, natural language processing, clinical decision support, epidemiology and biostatistics, and genomics.

Neurosciences and pain

Understanding mechanisms of pain and anesthetic action is vital to the development of novel anesthetics. Faculty also investigate a variety of neuroscience topics relevant to the perioperative period, including central nervous system injury, neurodegenerative disease, neuroimmune modulation, neuroinflammation, cerebrovascular malformations, delirium, sleep, and opioid use.

Organ injury and immune-based therapies

Organ injury is a common cause of death in surgical and ICU patients. Faculty study a broad range of topics related to organ injury, including acute kidney injury, acute lung injury, transplant immunology, endothelial dysfunction, trauma, sepsis, and shock. Faculty also develop novel immune-based therapies for the treatment of acute and chronic disease.

Population health and implementation sciences

Population health examines the health outcomes and distribution of health within a group of people. Faculty aim to advance population health in perioperative care both locally and globally through research on health care practices and interventions, including quality improvement and implementation, health policy, health education, and patient safety.
