Matt Aldrich, MD, Appointed Senior Physician Executive of UCSF Health Capacity and Throughput

Matt Aldrich, MD

We are pleased to announce that Matt Aldrich, MD, has been appointed senior physician executive of UCSF Health Capacity and Throughput, reporting to Sheila Antrum, senior vice president and COO for UCSF Health, and Shelby Decosta, president of the UCSF Health Care Network.

Aldrich has served in this position on an interim basis since last year and was selected after a formal search process. In this role, he has been instrumental in providing physician leadership for the Patient Capacity Management Center (PCMC) to support inpatient access, capacity management, and patient throughput at all UCSF Health sites of care for adults and pediatrics.

Aldrich will continue to work in tandem with Toni Workman-Braden, DNP, RN, executive director for UCSF Health Enterprise Operations, to provide leadership for the PCMC in various internal and external functions, including throughput process improvement work, capacity management planning, and resolving issues of service disputes when needed.

UCSF Health opened the PCMC on February 1, 2023 in order to maximize our capacity to see patients, while also helping ensure patients and families have the smoothest journey possible through our health system and improving the experience for our staff and clinicians.

The PCMC provides a holistic view of a patient’s journey from our entry points – such as the ED, physician offices, outpatient clinics and transfer from outside facilities – through admission, care coordination and discharge. It’s also important that we focus on that holistic view as we strengthen relationships with affiliates and key partner hospitals in California.

Aldrich holds a medical degree from Stanford School of Medicine and completed his residency in anesthesia and fellowships in critical care and cardiac anesthesia at UCSF. In addition to his duties as a faculty member in the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care, he previously held positions as executive medical director of critical care medicine, as well as medical director of the Rapid Response Team.

Aldrich is a respected senior clinician and leader who has established strong relationships throughout the health system and has a deep knowledge of the strengths and challenges at UCSF Health.

We want to thank the search committee and interviewers for their time and participation.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Matt Aldrich.
