Advanced Clinical Training for Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia at UCSF The advanced clinical training in pediatric cardiac anesthesiology offers a one-year specialized training program for anesthesiologists who have completed anesthesiology training and have completed advance fellowship training in pediatric anesthesiology or adult cardiac anesthesiology. International applicants should have similar training in their respective countries. The focus of this additional year of training is to learn perioperative anesthetic care of pediatric patients with complex congenital defects. Fellow trainees will care for pediatric patients in cardiac operating rooms, catheterization labs and electrophysiology laboratories, as well as general operating rooms. With more than 400 index cardiac cases, 700 cardiac catheterizations performed annually, our program is robust and growing. Specifically, our center excels in the care of neonates, premature babies, and small-for-age babies born with complex congenital defects. We are a referral center for a large catchment area of Northern California and from across the US. We work with four internationally recognized congenital cardiothoracic surgeons. Each month during your fellowship training, you are assigned two academic days. Additionally, you may use one month of your elective rotation to pursue your academic interests. As a fellow, you will also spend one month in the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit. You will be appointed as a clinical instructor in the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care at UCSF. As such, you qualify for faculty-based benefits that include accrual of 2 vacation days per month. We accept one fellow for advanced training in pediatric cardiac anesthesia per year. Education during the year includes weekly didactic sessions, weekly pre-surgery and in-patient cardiology conferences and monthly quality-improvement conferences for the Pediatric Heart Center. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until a candidate has been selected. Interested applicants should send a letter of interest, a CV, and three letters of recommendation to Dr. Anshuman Sharma at [email protected].
