We are delighted to announce that Professor Mervyn Maze, MB ChB, former chair and beloved current faculty member in the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care, has been named the 2022 recipient of the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) Mentoring Excellence in Research Award!
Cementing the importance of mentorship early-on in his career, while pursuing his internal medicine residency at the Royal Free Hospital in London, Maze “met an inspirational leader who introduced [him] to structured clinical research.”
In addition to clinical training in internal medicine, I also was dealing with everything from regulatory compliance to prosecuting clinical trials. To help, my mentor plugged me into a worldwide collegial enterprise that taught me how important it is to provide rich, collaborative experiences for deserving students and residents. It is through these interactions that we can continually improve our profession’s ability to save lives and improve the quality of those lives. - Mervyn Maze
An icon of anesthesia research, Maze is the co-inventor of dexmedetomidine and the 2003 recipient of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Excellence in Research Award. His unwavering support of mentees at all career levels is helping to ensure the ongoing development of anesthesiology research, education, and patient care well into the future.
