We are delighted to announce that Heather Hervey-Jumper, MD, Associate Professor of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care, has accepted our offer to become the next director of the Program in Medical Education for the Urban Underserved (PRIME-US), effective August 1, 2022.
Dr. Hervey-Jumper is committed to medical education and believes in the potential of UCSF to produce impactful and dynamic physicians to care for the underserved in our communities. Since 2018, she has served as a confidential medical student career advisor, and has mentored medical students as a Bridges Curriculum Coach since 2020. In 2021, Dr. Hervey-Jumper received the Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators Excellence in Teaching Award, a peer-nominated award for teachers that create an encouraging and intellectually stimulating environment that promotes critical thinking and learning.
Prior to relocating to the Bay Area, Dr. Hervey-Jumper spent seven years as a faculty member at the Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she served resource-limited patients from Detroit and the surrounding metro Detroit region. Her experience at the VA taught her that it is essential for medical education to help physicians understand and address the challenges and needs of underserved patients.
Throughout her career, Dr. Hervey-Jumper has been dedicated to broadening the physician workforce pipeline to include more students from underrepresented in medicine backgrounds. At the University of Michigan, she served as a member on the Office of Equity and Inclusion Mentor and Medical School application review committee, on the School of Medicine Admissions committee, and on the School of Medicine Executive Admissions committee. Upon arriving at UCSF in 2017, she worked with the UCSF School of Medicine Admissions committee as an interviewer and was selected to serve on the UCSF School of Medicine Executive Admissions board.
Since joining UCSF, Dr. Hervey-Jumper has focused on the education and advancement of underrepresented in medicine students and faculty as a member of the Diversity Committee for the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care. In 2020, she served with Gabriel Sarah, MD, as co-interim Vice Chair of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the department, during which time they implemented several diversity important initiatives and led a national search for the department’s next Vice Chair of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
Dr. Hervey-Jumper is a member of the planning committee and faculty participant for Students Capturing the OR Experience (SCORE), which hosts San Francisco public high school students from underrepresented in medicine backgrounds for a day of immersive, experiential education sessions to learn about various health sciences careers and specialties. She is lecturer for the Dream Maker program, which mentors middle and high school students and is a mentor with the Jion Academy, which supports the academic advancement of young women of color (ages 13-18) living in Oakland who are interested in STEM fields.
Dr. Hervey-Jumper earned a Bachelor of Science from Oakwood University, a Historically Black University in Huntsville, Alabama. She received her medical degree from The Ohio State University and completed her anesthesiology residency training at the University of Michigan.
