The second Annual George Gregory Lecture took place on October 22, 2025, at UCSF’s Mission Bay campus. This year, the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care was honored to host guest speaker Steven Paul Miller, MDCM, FRCPC, FRSC, the James and Annabel McCreary Chair in Pediatrics, and Professor and Head of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia. Dr. Michael Gropper, Distinguished Professor and Chair of the department, began by welcoming the group. Then Dr. Anshuman Sharma, Director of Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia and Director of Pediatric Anesthesia Research, introduced Dr. Miller, sharing the connection that Dr. Miller has with UCSF, having trained here with Dr. Gregory.

Dr. Sharma highlighted Dr. Miller’s impressive career: Dr. Miller’s work, supported by over $93 million in grants, has led to more than 280 publications. One of the most significant insights that his research has shown is that in children born with complex congenital cardiac disease, abnormal brain development starts early in the fetal life, secondary to depleted oxygen delivery – a crucial distinction for anesthesiologists. Dr. Miller has earned over 30 honors for his exceptional contributions to research, his passion for mentorship, and his dedication to patient care, including the prestigious James Graham Award from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

In his lecture, titled “Brain Health in the Preterm Neonate: The Importance of the Everyday,” Dr. Miller shared insights on how everyday clinical care, particularly procedural pain and sedation, affects and shapes early brain development in preterm neonates.
