On Tuesday, October 8, 2024, Dr. Michael Gropper, Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care, delivered the inaugural State of the Department Address. Over 120 attendees, both in person and via Zoom, were treated to an overview of the department’s recent accomplishments and future plans. An audience facing a man in a navy blazer delivering remarks from a podium with a slide on a screen behind himGropper began by reflecting on his personal journey, from growing up in San Francisco to his tenure at UCSF–which began in 1994! While sharing a family photo, he noted, “There are a lot of things that are important in my life, but you can see what’s most important.”

Gropper then addressed his key priorities as chair, sharing the department’s revamped mission and vision, leadership updates, selected awards and achievements, financials, and highlights across clinical, education, and research pillars. Gropper celebrated the release of the 10th Edition of Miller’s Anesthesia, for which he serves as Editor-in-Chief, along with several outstanding recent publications and research awards.

He toasted the department’s newly launched website, the C8 Health app, the 2023 Annual Report, and a recently filmed Welcome video that showcases what the Anesthesia department is all about. Gropper touched on departmental well-being data, including Net Promoter Score and Gallup survey results, and how these insights will shape future initiatives. He also provided DEI updates (check out the 2023 Annual DEI report for more details).

Finally, Gropper shared how excited he is about the department’s rapid growth and the challenges and opportunities it presents.
