January 13, 2025 By Kate Alfieri The Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care held its 12th Annual Anesthesia Research Day (ARD) on December 6, 2024. This annual event was founded by former Vice Chair for Research, the late Dr. William L. Young, to showcase department research and provide an opportunity to network with colleagues. With over 110 attendees, the event was the department’s most successful ARD to date. After a lunch buffet and opening remarks by Drs. Michael Gropper and Judith Hellman, the 2024 program kicked off with a guest lecture by Duminda N. Wijeysundera, MD, PhD, FRCPC from the University of Toronto and St. Michael’s Hospital – Unity Health Toronto on “Assessment of Functional Capacity Before Noncardiac Surgery: Does It Matter and How Should We Do It?”. Dr. Hellman presented him with a plaque to commemorate the occasion. Image A series of oral presentations and “ePosters” highlighted the research of junior faculty and research trainees, each selected by the ARD abstract review committee. New this year, the ePosters, 5-minute oral presentations, replaced the moderated physical posters that formerly took place during the poster session. Another new feature of ARD 2024 was a “Spotlight” talk on a topic selected by the planning committee. Dr. Catherine Chen gave the Spotlight on Health Services Research talk entitled “The Role of Monitored Anesthesia Care for Cataract Surgery Sedation: What Have We Learned So Far?” The day culminated in a general poster session, which included 53 posters presented by faculty, residents, fellows, postdocs, students, and staff. The 12th Annual Anesthesia Research Day was organized by Drs. Michael Gropper, Judith Hellman, Helen Kim, and Kate Alfieri, along with Julie Leong, Nancy Ha, and Alexandra Romero. Dr. Liz Whitlock hosted the guest lecturer and Drs. Odmara Barreto Chang and Wei Zhou moderated the oral presentations and ePosters.
