Education highlights

The Education program has continued to improve our Anesthesia Education Days (AED). We’ve introduced more simulation sessions and workshops, providing hands-on opportunities to deepen skills. Additionally, we’ve expanded our board prep sessions, ensuring our trainees feel prepared and confident for their examinations.

Our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is evident in our compact, impactful DEI lectures. We’ve upgraded our facilities with new equipment at ZSFG and a new state-of-the-art skills lab with a TEE/TTE/POCUS Simulator at Parnassus. We increased sessions focusing on private practice, insurance, finances, and more, to offer our trainees access to the breadth of options available to them.

We have increased regional experience with expanded rotations at the Orthopaedic Institute and the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) and have added additional AED sessions on regional techniques/workshops.

We have offered more opportunities for social events with Education leaders, including Taco Tuesdays at the home of Kristina Sullivan, MD, and Assessment for Graduate Medical Education at UCSF and wine nights with John Turnbull, MD, Associate Program Director for Curriculum. Members of Education leadership have also been present at all AED lunches. In the past year, we have built community and improved shared space by organizing events such as family dinners, First Fridays, and CA2/3 Retreats to nourish connection for our trainees. We also had a record number of trainees attend the 2023 Department Holiday Party.

We created a resident-specific lounge at Parnassus in the S-455 hallway and stocked it with snacks. We purchased custom department-branded scrub caps, jackets, and more.

Finally, to increase complex airway experience, we developed an Airway rotation (beginning May 2024) for residents on M-SR (Mostly CA3s, senior CA2s).
