Pediatric Anesthesia

Pediatric Anesthesia has had a productive year! Our case volume at all three sites has increased, and our faculty continues to grow to accommodate the increased demand.

Research

This fall, we hosted the second annual George Gregory Lecture. Dr. Steven Miller, the chair of pediatrics from the University of British Columbia, and former UCSF fellow and faculty member, presented a captivating talk that outlined his research career examining neonatal brain development and pain perception. Pediatric Anesthesia faculty were fortunate to have 16 peer-reviewed publications published in the last academic year.

Education

This year, our fellowship expanded to four fellows. The expansion made the class feel like more of a community and allowed us to have consistent fellow involvement at each of our sites.

We continue with the Visiting Scholars in Pediatric Anesthesia Program—a faculty and fellow educational exchange program with over 25 fellowship programs worldwide!

Clinical

Our clinical footprint has continued to increase, with OR volumes approaching a total of 16,000 annual cases, including 7,000 at Mission Bay, 7,000 at Oakland, with another 2,000+ cases at our outpatient surgery center in Walnut Creek. We have welcomed several new pediatric surgeons, including a general surgeon, a pediatric urologist, and a pediatric ENT. Our hospital beds are at or near capacity most days, and often we find inpatient overflow in our pediatric preop unit.
