About the Trauma Center Our Department provides essential support to the Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital’s Level 1 Trauma Center, the only Trauma Center in San Francisco, handling nearly 4,000 trauma activations annually. Additionally, we extend our trauma services to the northern part of San Mateo County, serving a population of 1.5 million people. The multidisciplinary Trauma Center requires a coordinated effort from surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensive care staff, nurses, radiologists, and paramedics to deliver timely, life-saving care around the clock across multiple UCSF campuses. We provide a high standard of care and as an institution, we have been consistently recognized as a Center of Excellence for Neurotrauma, Stroke, and Orthopedics. Who we are A trauma anesthesiologist is a specialized physician who plays a critical role in the care of adult and pediatric patients with severe and life-threatening injuries. They are responsible for providing anesthesia during emergency surgeries and procedures, ensuring that patients remain stable and pain-free. Their expertise extends beyond the operating room, as they also manage the patient's airway, breathing, and circulation in acute trauma settings, often working closely with trauma surgeons and other emergency medical personnel. Additionally, trauma anesthesiologists are skilled in advanced resuscitation techniques and pain management strategies, which are vital for optimizing patient outcomes in the high-pressure environment of trauma care. Their ability to make quick, informed decisions can be the difference between life and death for critically injured patients. Research Our trauma research, supported by an annual budget exceeding $200 million, includes 20 UCSF research centers, such as the Traumatic Brain Injury Program and the Orthopedic Trauma Center. These centers ensure that our services are cutting-edge and optimized for patient outcomes. Fellowship opportunities Our Department also offers a Trauma and Acute Care Anesthesia Fellowship, which is tailored to prepare future trauma anesthesiologists to be high-performance communicators, exceptional clinical team leaders, and experts in trauma physiology, all while driving quality improvement.
