The department of anesthesia provides a broad range of services across multiple surgical specialties. Anesthesiologists from the department work across all the UCSF Health campuses as well as the VA and ZSFG. Some sites have specialty focuses, like trauma for ZSFG or cancer surgery at MB, but all sites provide for general surgical cases. Our collaboration with multidisciplinary surgeons enhances patient outcomes through validated programs like Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS). The ERAS pathway is an integrated care approach encompassing interventions throughout all phases of perioperative care, including preoperative planning, the day of surgery, intraoperative management, postoperative care, and discharge. ERAS aims to minimize the surgical stress response and maintain normal physiology during the perioperative period to improve patient outcomes and shorten hospital stay. Departmental members also participate in multicentered research studies, like THRIVE, to improve delivery of anesthetic care.
