The Manuel Perioperative Health Equity Lab conducts clinically grounded research aimed at improving the quality, safety, and equity of perioperative care. Our work begins with problems encountered in real clinical environments: communication barriers, differences in pain assessment and treatment, variation in care pathways, challenges in transitions of care, and clinical practices whose benefits and harms are not fully understood. We use health services and outcomes research, implementation science, quality-improvement methods, bioethics, evidence synthesis, consensus methods, and clinical investigation to understand these problems and develop practical solutions. We work across disciplines and specialties and actively involve trainees in the research process. Medical students, residents, fellows, undergraduate researchers, and junior faculty have participated in developing research questions, analyzing clinical problems, presenting findings, and translating evidence into improvements in care.
