The UCSF Center for Pain Medicine

The UCSF Center for Pain Medicine, located in the Bayfront Medical Building at the Mission Bay campus, was established in 1987 by the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care to help patients with all kinds of complex pain –acute or chronic, surgical or non-surgical. We strive to provide pain care that is individualized, multi-disciplinary, and comprehensive.

Chronic pain is a multifaceted medical problem that affects all aspects of a patient’s life. As such, is diverse, with physicians all board certified in Pain Medicine but with a variety of backgrounds: anesthesiology, neurology, family medicine, physiatry, and more. Of course, pain psychologists are also an integral, invaluable part of our care team.

Patient engagement and education about pain are other important components of our program.

Our Center

The Center was designated as a Clinical Center of Excellence in Pain Management in 2007 by the American Pain Society, and averages about 800 patient visits per month.
