About

Welcome to Dr. Kerstin Kolodzie's Perioperative Clinical Research Group

As physician scientist, my goal is to improve outcomes after surgery. I design, conduct, and analyze clinical research studies that are intended to optimize patient care, starting with the preparation for surgery and extending through to the entire postoperative period. I have worked in areas such as postoperative pain after orthopedic surgery and postoperative nausea and vomiting.

More recently, my work has centered on patients undergoing kidney transplantation. In the Unites States, the number of patients listed for kidney transplantation dramatically exceeds the number of organs available. This organ shortage mandates research to understand and avoid suboptimal outcomes after transplant. Relevant outcomes do not only include the function of the transplanted organ. I am specifically interested in measures to improve overall health, well-being and quality of life after kidney transplantation.

Kerstin Kolodzie, MD, PhD, MAS

I am board certified in Anesthesiology and Emergency Medicine in Germany. Originating from Hamburg, I joined the Perioperative Clinical Research Core, Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Care at UCSF from 2007 to 2009 as a research fellow. Since then, I have researched perioperative outcomes in several areas such as postoperative pain after orthopedic surgery and postoperative nausea and vomiting. To further improve my skills and knowledge I completed a Master’s Degree program of Advanced Studies (MAS) in Clinical Research in 2019. I perform evidence based quantitative systematic reviews, epidemiological research, and controlled clinical trials. Concomitantly, I hold a full faculty appointment as Associate Professor of Anesthesia in the Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Care at UCSF since 2007. In my clinical practice, I am specialized in regional anesthesia and anesthesia for orthopedic surgery.

Dr. Ӧzlem S. Cakmakkaya is an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology in Istanbul/Turkey. She is specialized in pediatric anesthesia. From 2007 to 2009 she joined the Perioperative Clinical Research Core, Dept. of Anesthesia at UCSF as a clinical research fellow. In addition, she earned a PhD degree in Medical Education from the University of Ege, Turkey. Her area of expertise is data management, statistical data analysis and meta-analysis. Dr. Cakmakkaya's expertise in biostatistics makes her a valued resource for the research group and we continue to collaborate on several projects such as systematic reviews and data analysis.

Currrently, Dr. Cakmakkaya holds a faculty position at the Department of Medical Education, University of Istanbul-Cerrahpasa, Cerrahpasa Medical School and serves as the Chair of the Department.

Alice Roberts

Ms. Roberts holds a Masters of Arts in Anthropology and a Certificate in Editing from UC Berkeley. She began working with Dr. Kolodzie in 2007 as a member of the Perioperative Clinical Research Core. She has over ten years experience as a medical editor and writer and has worked on a variety of research projects. She currently acts as the medical writer and editor for Dr. Kolodzie’s lab.
