We are pleased to announce the inaugural recipients of the Patricia Sander Awards for Anesthesia Researchers for the 2019 – 2021 academic years. The Patricia Sander Awards are made possible by a $2,000,000 donation from an anonymous donor that established an endowment to support two awards every two years—one for a junior faculty member and the other for a mid-career faculty member who are conducting promising research. The Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care and the donor are particularly interested in using the awards to help mitigate the challenges faced by early- and mid-career faculty members trying to balance the demands of work and home life. Supporting these individuals at this critical juncture of their academic careers will maximize their chances of academic success.

Odmara Barreto Chang, MD, PhD

Dr. Odmara Barreto Chang is a Health Sciences Clinical Instructor and Research Fellow in the Training in Clinical Research (TICR) Program. She is a graduate of the UCSF Anesthesia and Perioperative Care Residency Program, and earned her MD and PhD in Neurosciences at Stanford University. Using her Patricia Sander Award funds, Dr. Barreto-Chang will look at postoperative cognitive dysfunction.
