We are pleased to announce that the department has named Matthieu Legrand, MD, PhD as the inaugural Director of Clinical Research effective November 1, 2021.

Dr. Legrand leads a clinical research program focused on outcomes research in critically ill and surgical patients, with a special focus on sepsis and acute kidney injury. He is the principal investigator of several large multicenter studies, including randomized controlled trials aimed at improving the outcomes of critically ill patients in the ICU or perioperative setting. In 2020, he received an IARS Initiative for Multicenter Pragmatic Anesthesiology Clinical Trials (IMPACT) Award for his research on The Choice of Vasopressors for Treating Hypotension During General Anesthesia: A Pilot Pragmatic Cluster Cross-Over Randomized Trial (the VEGA-1 Trial). Dr. Legrand serves as a research mentor for trainees in the department and is an active participant in the Multicenter Perioperative Outcomes Group (MPOG) and the Anesthesia Biostats and Clinical Research Design (ABCD) Group.

As the Director of Clinical Research, Dr. Legrand will identify areas for new clinical research projects, developing and implementing strategies to increase the extent, impact and visibility of clinical research in the Department of Anesthesia. He will work to increase the involvement of the department in existing and future clinical trials and cohort studies and will build interdisciplinary teams to compete for federal and private funding for clinical trials led by principal investigators in the department.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Legrand.
