Improving Patient Care at ZSFG with Enhanced Recovery after Surgery Pathways

Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) is a standardized approach to caring for patients before, during, and after surgery, that is intended to shorten hospital stays, speed the patient’s recovery process, and reduce costs. The ERAS concept was introduced in 1997 by Dr. Henrik Kehlet and colleagues in Europe. At UCSF, ERAS pathways have improved outcomes for colorectal surgeries since a 2013 pilot, and additional ERAS pathways have since been established. Recently, Drs. Laura Lang and Ben Lancman’s proposal to develop ERAS pathways at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital garnered a $100,000 SURF grant from the UCSF Clinical Practice Group at ZSFG. At UCSF Anesthesia and Perioperative Care, we are working hard to improve the lives of patients and populations by creating and implementing urgently needed new practices, policies, therapies and cures.
