Errol Lobo, MD, PhD, at a podium

Congratulations to Errol Lobo, MD, PhD, on his well-deserved appointment as Chair of the Anesthesiology Department at Cedars Sinai

Lobo will be sorely missed at UCSF. A graduate of UCSF’s MD, PhD, internship and residency programs, and the 1987 recipient of the UCSF Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior, Award, Lobo’s UCSF ties are strong. For over 30 years, he has been an essential leader and team member in the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care, the School of Medicine, and UCSF Health, holding critical roles as the chief of vascular anesthesia, director of anesthesia clinical services, vice chair for clinical affairs, and president of the UCSF Medical Staff.

Astute and discerning, as a department leader Lobo oversaw explosive growth in anesthesia clinical services, working within and outside the department to meet the ever more complex clinical demands of our expanding health system. Moreover, serving on the School of Medicine Admissions Committee, Committee on Affirmative Action and Diversity, Minority Mentorship Program and the Committee on Equal Opportunity, Lobo’s leadership helped to drive ongoing excellence and a focus on diversity, equity and inclusion within the school, anesthesia training programs, and across the UCSF campus.

Lobo’s research has spanned topics from preoperative triaging of surgical patients, treatment of morbid obesity, to spinal cord protection in patients undergoing endovascular repair of thoracic aortic aneurysms. Outside of UCSF, Lobo is well-known for his global health work, serving regularly with Operation Rainbow and other organizations in support of the UCSF mission to advance health worldwide. He was appointed an honorary member of the Kenya Society of Anesthesiology in 2009.

We’re grateful for Errol Lobo’s many years of contributions, dedication and outstanding leadership, and wish him well in his new position, where we know he will continue to positively impact our specialty. Please join us in thanking and congratulating Dr. Lobo.

Fun fact: You can find Dr. Lobo’s photo on one of the pillars outside of the Medical Sciences Building lobby at 513 Parnassus.
