Developing UCSF’s Graduate Certificate in LGBTQI Clinical Practice and Research – Assistant Professor Gabriel Sarah, MD, and Team Awarded Education Innovations Funding

UCSF marches during the 2016 Pride Parade in San Francisco, CA Sunday, June 26, 2016

According to several recent studies, the LGBTQI community has greater odds for mental and physical health issues than their heterosexual and cisgender counterparts, and health care professionals are not well trained to address these issues adequately. In response, Assistant Professor Gabriel Sarah, MD, along with team-members from across the UCSF campus, were awarded Education Innovations Funding from the UCSF Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators, the UCSF Program for Interprofessional Practice and Education, and the UCSF Library, to develop a certificate program in LGBTQI clinical practice and research. The proposal will build on existing resources at UCSF, and will begin with an initial needs assessment with stake holders at UCSF to determine “the needed elements of an LGBTQI clinical and research certificate.” The team will then develop specific course and certificate curriculum based on this needs assessment. Finally, a business plan to ensure the certificate program’s sustainability will be established and implemented. Click here to read the full proposal.
