Building a Bright Future: Students Capturing the OR Experience (SCORE)

Student with UCSF clinical staff in the UCSF OR at SCORE 2020

With existing health and societal inequities exacerbated by the pandemic, UCSF Anesthesia and Perioperative Care department members and partners are working collaboratively to engage with the local community and support URM students from the San Francisco Unified School District. Now in its fifth year, the annual Students Capturing the OR Experience Program (SCORE) brings local high school students into the world of health care, introducing them to an array of rewarding careers where their strengths and talents can be applied.

Held on Friday, April 22, 2022, this year’s SCORE program included hands-on simulation sessions, both large and small group discussions, lectures and Q&A with UCSF URM leaders, as well as three surgical overviews and a mentoring session. During the simulation sessions, in small breakout groups the students learned about and practiced taking vital signs, using a stethoscope and pulse oximeter, and measuring blood pressure. They were then able to hear from and interact with UCSF leaders such as School of Medicine Dean Talmadge E. King, Jr, MD, before seeing videos from three different surgeries actually performed at UCSF. Students heard an explanation of each surgery and were then led through a guided discussion at the end of each video, followed by a debrief with the larger group. Finally, students participated in small group mentoring sessions and were provided with resources and tips to help poise themselves for successful careers in health care or any other profession they might pursue. See the day's schedule below.

Conceived of and led by Charlene Blake, MD, PhD, we hope that the innovative SCORE program can help increase the number of URM individuals working in the health care professions in the Bay Area, thereby supporting innovation and ultimately reducing health care disparities.
