Anesthesia Simulation Learning in Eastern Uganda

With generous contributions from many collaborators (including the Hellman Fellows Fund), faculty and residents have partnered with anesthesiologists at Busitema University and Mbale Regional Referral Hospital (Uganda) to open a new anesthesia simulation and skills center. The facility is located in Mbale, Uganda and will be primarily utilized to train medical students and non-physician anesthesia providers with essential anesthesia skills.

The facility will be utilized to implement a continuing medical education course for rural anesthesia providers in the region, as well as a novel, comprehensive simulation-based curriculum for the practice of anesthesia in low-resource settings. The project is part of an ongoing collaboration that aims to increase the number of skilled anesthesia providers in Uganda. The Ugandan project lead, Dr. Fred Bulamba, will be participating in the UCSF Simulation Fellowship in the Summer and Fall of 2017.
