Modeled on the already successful Midwest Anesthesia Residents’ Conference, the first Western Anesthesia Residents’ Conference (WARC – then called the West Coast Anesthesia Residents’ Conference) was organized by UCSF Anesthesia residents Giles Merkel and Morley Singer in 1963, and included anesthesia residents from UCLA, UCSD, UCSF, University of Colorado, University of Southern California, University of Oregon, Stanford University, and University of Washington. Since then, the WARC conference has grown to include several other programs from the western US, and is run annually at rotating sites. The conference provides residents with the opportunity to present their work to a national audience without being overshadowed by their faculty mentors. In addition, residents can network with their peers and are exposed to a variety of techniques and approaches to solving anesthetic issues. Residents are also able to gain practical experience with how to organize and run a large meeting. Hosted by the University of Colorado, the 57th annual WARC was held this May, 2019, and included poster sessions, oral presentations, and a special guest lecture by Dr. Tom Hornbein, who had described his Mount Everest climb as a guest lecturer at the inaugural WARC. 30 UCSF Anesthesia residents attended, giving 4 oral presentations and providing 31 posters. We are also pleased to announce that UCSF Anesthesia and Perioperative Care residents Drs. Michael Jung, Justin Libaw and Kevin Ma won best pediatric anesthesia poster at the meeting, for: Feasibility of Perioperative Virtual Reality for Anxiolysis during Induction of Anesthesia in Pediatric Patients.
