We are sad to report the loss of a beloved alumnus and former faculty member, Dr. John Wade. A graduate of our residency and fellowship programs in 1968, he returned to study health policy at UCSF and Stanford from 1988 to 1989, while attending in our ORs.

Throughout his career, Dr. Wade was a tireless patient safety and quality improvement advocate, developing multiple national programs in Canada that improved the lives of patients there and worldwide. After chairing the Steering Committee for Canadian Patient Safety, he became the founding chair of the Canadian Patient Safety Institute, formed because of the Steering Committee’s report. Dr. Wade was also instrumental in the establishment of the Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety.

Dr. Wade also contributed to improvements in medical education worldwide. As chair of the Health and Public Policy Committee, he led the development of the CanMEDS proposal for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The CanMeds framework outlines the competencies physicians need to best serve their patients – and has been adopted nationally in Canada and around the world.

Among his many distinguished leadership roles, Dr. Wade notably served as the Deputy Minister of Health in Manitoba, chair of Anesthesia at the University of Manitoba, and Dean of the Max Rady College of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to medicine, he was appointed as a member of the Order of Canada in 2019.

We join the University of Manitoba and his friends and colleagues in mourning the loss of Dr. John Wade, and extend our condolences to his family and other loved ones.
