UCSF Teaching Hospitals

Our Residency Program provides an extensive and varied clinical experience at the following facilities:

The Medical Center of the University of California (Moffitt/Long Hospitals, UCSF Children's Hospital and UCSF Ambulatory Surgery Center) consists of 560 beds with 26 operating rooms that are devoted to extensive teaching, research, and patient service in all the specialties of modern medicine and surgery. Approximately 25 percent of the anesthesia administered at Moffitt/Long Hospital is done outside the main operating rooms. This includes interventional neuroradiology, adult and pediatric cardiac cath labs, and other locations where diagnostic procedures are done, such as MRI.

San Francisco General Hospital is a 300-bed hospital, owned and operated by the City and County of San Francisco, and managed by the San Francisco Director of Public Health. The hospital has eight operating rooms. SFGH is the only trauma center for the City and County of San Francisco, always ready for any and all emergencies.

The Veterans Affairs Medical Center is a 120-bed hospital which has seven operating rooms and serves as the Veterans Affairs Center for most of Northern California and part of Nevada. All types of surgery are done here, including major vascular and cardiac surgery.

UCSF/Mount Zion Medical Center is the University of California, San Francisco cancer surgery hospital. It has 50 in-patient beds, and 7 ICU beds. Eight operating rooms provide services for both same-day and in-hospital cancer surgery. Mount Zion Hospital specializes in surgery for breast cancer, prostate cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, orthopedic cancer, and endocrine abnormalities.

Kaiser Hospital San Francisco is part of Kaiser Permanente, the nation's largest not-for-profit health plan. Our residents participate in a busy cardiac anesthesia service.

Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland is the only independent children's hospital in Northern California, and a site for additional pediatric anesthesia experience.

Our residents also have opportunities to schedule elective rotations at other locations.
