Teaching Hospitals

UCSF Medical Center
(Moffitt/Long Hospitals, UCSF Children's Hospital, UCSF Ambulatory Surgery Center) Ranked one of the nation's top 10 hospitals by U.S. News & World Report, the UCSF Medical Center has been recognized throughout the world for innovative patient care, advanced technology, and pioneering research. The Medical Center consists of 560 beds with 26 operating rooms that are devoted to extensive teaching, research, and patient care in all the specialties of modern medicine and surgery. Approximately 25% of all anesthesia services are administered outside of the main operating rooms. This includes locations such as interventional neuroradiology, adult and pediatric cardiac cath labs, and other locations where diagnostic procedures are performed.

UCSF Mount Zion Medical Center
Mount Zion Medical Center is a hub of specialized clinics and surgery services focusing on comprehensive cancer care. Mt. Zion has 50 inpatient beds, seven intensive care beds, and eight operating rooms. Surgical care most often involves patients with breast cancer, prostate cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, orthopedic cancer, and endocrine abnormalities.

San Francisco General Hospital
San Francisco General Hospital is the only Level 1 Trauma Center available for the over 1.5 million people living and working in San Francisco and San Mateo Counties. It is a 300-bed hospital with eight operating rooms and three separate intensive care units. San Francisco General Hospital provides 24-hour, comprehensive emergent, urgent, and non-urgent care to 98,000 patients annually.

Veteran Affairs Medical Center
The San Francisco VA Medical Center is a 120-bed hospital with seven operating rooms. It serves as the Veterans Affairs Center for more than 300,000 veterans living in Northern California and parts of Nevada. All types of surgery are performed here, including major vascular and cardiac surgery. Residents will also have the opportunity to rotate in the intensive care unit.

Kaiser Hospital - San Francisco
The Kaiser Hospital in San Francisco is part of Kaiser Permanente, the nation's largest not-for-profit health plan. Residents participate in a busy adult cardiothoracic anesthesia service, as well as a rotation in obstetric anesthesia.

Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland
Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland is the only independent children's hospital in Northern California and is the oldest pediatric medical center between Los Angeles and Seattle. "CHO" is a site for additional pediatric anesthesia experience for our CA-2 residents.

UCSF Orthopaedic Institute
The UCSF Orthopaedic Institute was designed to deliver world-class orthopaedic care, offering state-of-the-art equipment and technology. Residents can hone their regional anesthesia skills at this outpatient surgery site as one of their selectives during their CA-3 year.
