Brian Ash
CA-3
We had him at "away elective".
Brian Ash's first exposure to the UCSF Department of Anesthesia was during an away elective in medical school. Although Anesthesia had been a "black box" for him initially, after spending a week-long Anesthesia rotation as a third-year medical student he realized how much physiology was actually involved in the specialty. It was Brian's affinity for physiology that motivated him to explore Anesthesia further.
Choosing to come here from the University of Pennsylvania for the elective, Brian says it was the great reputation and "good vibes from good people" in the department that helped cement this place as his first choice for residency. Now here as a third year resident, Brian has chosen to continue in the Department with a Critical Care Medicine Fellowship upon graduation.
With diverse metropolitan hospital settings, Brian is getting great training. "Things change from second to second instead of week to week. We're doing different procedures every day and always thinking on our feet."
Brian is originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. We wonder - is he headed home after this? "I love San Francisco. It is such a great city. I also love skiing, and Tahoe is very close by." Turns out he has further reason to stay; Brian met his wife at CPMC here in San Francisco, and his family back in Pennsylvania decided to relocate to the Bay Area. Looks like he'll be sticking around.
