Sarah Gebauer
CA-2
Sarah is a big fan of San Francisco, and the Bay Area as a whole. Having received her medical school training at Stanford, she didn't need to move far for residency.
Besides all that San Francisco has to offer, one particularly important characteristic of the city where she wanted to do her residency is that it needed to have a large Spanish-speaking population. San Francisco's quite diverse, and offers Sarah lots of practice for her Spanish skills.
Another merit of the program here is what Sarah says is good compensation for a resident. The salary she is receiving leaves her just fine to live in San Francisco. Beyond just income, she receives two housing bonuses to help with living - one from the University and one from the Dept of Anesthesia.
While Sarah loves the program and the city, she isn't sitting put by any means. She is part of the Global Health Clinical Scholars Program, and will get the opportunity to spend 3 months in Nepal on a research project.
She was initially a bit hesitant about UCSF, though. Peers had indicated that the Anesthesia program here was known to be tough. What she sought by considering UCSF was great training, which she knew she would receive. She has discovered the contrary to peer's advice, and describes the environment as non-hierarchical and very supportive. With the training she is receiving, she feels she is "good to go anywhere".
