UCSF Innovative Residency Tracks in Critical Care Medicine

UCSF Research Scholars

Our goal is the implementation of a superior comprehensive critical care training program that will enable trainees to better meet the needs of the critically ill patient.

A report from the 2005 American Society of Anesthesiologists Task Force on Future Paradigms of Anesthesia Practice suggests that the specialty needs a substantial increase in anesthesiology-trained critical care physicians to meet the needs of future hospital practice.

The goal of this track is to define an educational curriculum that will provide the foundations for a successful career in critical care anesthesiology and enable anesthesiology critical care medicine physicians to better meet the needs of the critically ill patient. Graduates of this program would be board eligible for both anesthesiology and critical care medicine.

UCSF Research Scholars

The UCSF Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care is now offering a newly redesigned residency track designed to produce investigators in anesthesiology. This innovative residency track, which has been approved by the American Board of Anesthesiology and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, features two years of clinical anesthesia training and two years of research after the clinical base year. This track is intended to prepare candidates for academic careers as independent clinician-scientists.

Trainees will benefit from the wealth of research opportunities available on the UCSF campus. These opportunities include the new Pathways to Discovery programs in Molecular Medicine or Clinical and Translational Research.

We've developed a new microsite to better show the research faculty at UCSF as well as their scientific interests.
