2007 FAER Summer Fellows Shine into the Fall

For the past two years, the Department of Anesthesia has participated in a summer fellowship program conducted by the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER). Through FAER Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowship, or MSARF, students receive eight-week fellowship awards to conduct research projects with the guidance of faculty mentors.

FAER also supports all MSARF students who attend the annual meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) to present information about their research. FAER sponsors a Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowship Symposium at the meeting.

2007 was our busiest yet as FAER selected three students to come to UCSF (pictured left to right): Craig Chen, Timothy Raissian, and Saras Sharma. Two of the three were able to attend the ASA meeting, held last October in San Francisco.

Craig Chen is a UCSF student who is interested in exploring research that addresses issues faced by critically ill patients. He and his mentor, Dr. Susan Lynch, sought to determine if quorum sensing blocking agents induce acute infection in a variety of clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Craig presented his work at the ASA meeting.

Timothy Raissian visited from Meharry Medical College, where he developed an interest in critical care and the neurological aspects of anesthesiology. Working with faculty mentor Dr. Chanhung Lee, he studied the association of genetic polymorphisms and leukocyte reaction to inflammatory stimulation in brain vascular malformation patients.

Saras Sharma attends Touro University School of Medicine on Mare Island in Vallejo. He became interested in anesthesiology after shadowing a close family friend who is an anesthesiologist in Chicago. Saras and faculty mentor Greg Stratmann studied the effect of isoflurane on neuronal differentiation of neural stem cells in the dentate gyrus of rats. Saras also attended the ASA meeting to present his work.

Our congratulations to all three students for their work at UCSF.
