Assistant Clinical Professor Marek Brzezinski Receives Grant to Study PTSD
The two-year, $250,000 joint Department of Veteran’s Affairs and Department of Defense grant will fund Dr. Brzezinski’s research on the “Effect of Prophylactic, Perioperative Propranolol on Reduction in Peri- and Postoperative Complications in Patients with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder”. Dr. Brzezinski’s work raises important questions about the care of patients with PTSD. According to Dr. Brzezinski, “This is the first research to examine the mortality of patients with PTSD after surgery”.
With the number of veterans with the condition only due to increase, Dr. Brzezinski’s research takes a much needed step towards understanding its effects on patient outcomes.
As he states, “It's important for physicians to treat PTSD not only as a mental condition, but also as an independent risk factor for other health problems”. Dr. Brzezinski's collaborators and mentors in this work include VA Anesthesiologists Drs. Art Wallace and Brian Cason as well as Dr. Charles Marmar in the Department of Psychiatry.
