Students spend time at each of the three primary medical centers at UCSF: one week at the Medical Center at the University of California (Moffitt-Long Hospital), one week at Veterans Affairs Medical Center and two weeks at San Francisco General Hospital. Overall, the four-week rotation introduces students to a diversity of cases, patient populations, and educational culture at UCSF, an international leader in anesthesia research and clinical practice.
Teacher of the month: Dr. Brian Ash, CA-1
"Went out of his way to make it a good teaching opportunity!"
"Very enthusiastic and approachable."
"Dr. Ash was exceptionally kind and thoughtful. He willingly offered support and direction. He invited me to help and participate in cases and made the environment friendly and a positive learning experience"
"Brian was extremely friendly and enthusiastic about teaching...he is...great at explaining and teaching to medical students. He was very patient and encouraging. He was a great pleasure to work with."
"Brian is an awesome teacher. He really made me feel comfortable while learning and gave me the opportunity to not just observe but also participate as a full member of the anesthesia team. His teaching style is excellent - he mixes humor with really important concepts making the student able to learn much more effectively. An amazing asset to have in this teaching department"
Student Perspective:
"Anesthesia 140 was a great way to learn about how a large residency program functions. I was able to see many complex procedures such as brain aneurysm clipping at Moffitt/Long, as well as be a part of a dynamic team at SFGH during my night shifts. Overall, it gave me a great sense of what it would like to be a resident in training at UCSF."
